Wardrobe Series with Nicole Ku

We took an exclusive look inside the wardrobe of stylist and fashion photographer Nicole Ku @nicrific. Read on for fearless styling tips, notes on chasing inspiration, and follow her wardrobe clear-out journey on our Marketplace.

Can you describe your style?

Monochromatic, minimal and practical but always evolving and trying new things. Blazers are my obsession always, so I try to incorporate them into my looks.

What is the newest addition to your wardrobe?

A Louis Vuitton Alma BB handbag purchased before the lockdown - I'm always a sucker for classic pieces that will stand the test of time. My shopping habits changed drastically within the span of 2 years. It feels so good to take a moment and think about how the purchase will impact the carbon footprint. I always decide whether it's just a trend impulse or if it's something I will still like in 20 years time.

What is your favourite piece right now?

Today it's the Ellery Thunder Kiss cropped bomber - The dramatic sleeves make me look like Mechelin man but I wouldn't have it any other way!

What is your most worn item and why?

My most worn item is an Issey Miyake high-neck top from their Pleats Please line. It's effortlessly stylish and doesn't crinkle no matter where you put it. As a photographer and stylist I'm constantly on-the-go, so I need pieces that are versatile and doesn't require a lot of maintenance.

What garment has been your go-to while living in lockdown?

I've been living in my Lonely Hearts Norah Sweater and Levi's Balloon leg jeans. The combo is so cozy for this in-between weather Auckland has been having recently!

Where do you go for fashion inspiration?

It's a bit of an odd one, but I find an image I like on Instagram and tap to see which creatives are tagged and involved in the photoshoot. I do the same with whoever's page I'm on and keep going. You get stuck in a black hole but I find this way, you are able to find more international-based creatives that bring different perspectives in fashion. My favourite starting point right now is @cadwallader, the Creative Director of Mugler.

What would you buy first if money was no object?

It's a tie between the Bottega Veneta chain-strap leather clutch or the Balenciaga Hourglass bag. I swooned as soon as the images released last year.

Can you share one of your top styling tips with our community?

Pick the hero piece of your outfit and go through a Cher Horowitz wardrobe style process in your head to pick out which next pieces to pair with it. Don't be afraid to experiment with shapes, colours, and textures that seem out of the ordinary. If you're stuck, think of what mood you're trying to achieve.

Do you have a pre-loved purchase you can’t live without? Where did you find it?

I can't live without the Georgia Alice Snake Dress. I love how you can wear it by itself, or topped with a knit on top for a more casual/winter look. I found it for $50 here on DW - Crazy right?!
