Meet Ruby - our CEO and Mum to 1-year-old Bo and fur child Hank. We borrowed 15 minutes out of her busy day to chat about motherhood, finding work-life balance and piecing together a work-ready look when time is tight.
How do you juggle being a CEO and mum to Bo?
I’m incredibly lucky to have a partner who is both supportive of my work and an amazing Dad. I also think of work as part of my life, it’s something I want to do every day because I love it and I love the DW mission. But I always make sure that I get to see her happy little face every single day, even if it’s sometimes over Facetime from the office in the morning. It can be hectic, but I’ve become much more productive in the time I have - finding ways to work smarter, not necessarily longer.
What has surprised you most about being a mum?
How much I love her! I always knew that I wanted to come back to work fairly quickly after Bo was born, but there’s definitely a shift in priorities that goes hand in hand with becoming a parent. It’s so nice to be so needed and loved, absolutely unconditionally.
Do you see much of yourself in Bo?
I’ve loved watching her little personality emerge over the last year. She’s somewhat introverted, but very strong-willed and definitely knows what she wants. She’s a big fan of the word “no” at the moment. She seems to have taken a real interest in my sneaker collection lately so the apple clearly doesn’t fall too far from the tree.
What are your go-to wardrobe essentials for getting out the door quickly?
My style is very low maintenance and so I’ll usually throw on a t-shirt, a blazer and pants. Always pants. I have these great Wynn Hamlyn pants which are my current go-to, I have them in two colours and wear them almost every day. When I find something I like, I tend to buy it in multiple colours. I also steer clear of anything that needs ironing (we don’t own an iron) and I’m a big fan of menswear! As soon as I get home I change out of my work clothes and into something more relaxed so I can enjoy family time.
