Wardrobe Series with Mary Outram
Can you describe your style?
I think everyone has parts of their body they love more or things about themselves they like or don’t and we dress to suit these. I definitely buy to suit my body type as it's what I feel best in and I think that's a big part of feeling good about your style is not dressing to be someone else but ensuring its a mix of what inspires you but also what suits your body.
I would say that my style is classic and clean a lot of the time but then sometimes a bit salty... I like to wear things differently or sometimes a bit random just to show people how you can pull something off and I wear a lot of block colours which I find bold and stand out. I will often mix designer pieces with affordable ones as well, it’s not all about the price tag and if you put items together well, this can reflect that.
I am trying to shop smarter now and continue to tell myself "less is more Mary" because I used to just want loads of new things all the time which is a few months or a year I would no longer love, they weren't timeless. I shop smarter now and although sometimes buying a designer or expensive piece can take longer to save up for or feel like you've just sold your kidney for a jacket I think it's important to own those pieces that you will have for a lot longer or a lifetime.
What is the newest addition to your wardrobe?
I recently brought this wet shine black puffer jacket from The Post (in their closing down sale) that I had my eye on for a while, I think it was also perfect timing as Christchurch has been so chilly and I have used it almost every day since it arrived while out walking. It gives me all kinds of Kim Kardashian vibes and I love it. I also just brought 2 x $29 turtle necks from Glassons, I had two from last year and just topped up my wardrobe with these two more. Such staples and so easy to just pair with anything and layer for Autumn/ Winter and the quality for the price of them is amazing.
What is your favourite piece right now?
Over the knee boots, I recently bought a pair of Sam Edelman cream coloured ones from Revolve (on sale weeee) and I just love the look they give an outfit. I think they are so versatile in summer or winter, in a dress, jeans, shorts and skirt... you can wear them with or without tights and show so many different looks.
I think that's super important with any piece you buy, you shouldn’t just have one way of wearing the item. When I buy something now I do try tothink about three different outfits or looks/ ways to wear whatever that item is. By wearing something in different ways it feels like a new outfit.
Who is your style crush?
I am a super visual person and really love Instagram for that reason, I find so much inspiration from there and love it. I also love magazines and read blogs and use Pinterest. I love following my ultimate fashion inspiration Danielle Bernstein (@weworewhat on Instagram). She is a fashion blogger/ style icon who is from New York & I really find her business accomplishments & of course her style so inspiring. She’s the same age as I am & I find her both relatable & inspirational.
What would you buy first if money was no object?
This is hard, I think I would get a Bottega Veneta Pouch purse (only because I don’t know when I will be able to afford one) or some ridiculous over-the-top but amazing sparkly pieces from Mach and Mach which is a label I have been obsessed with for such a long time, they have the most insane fabrics and structured pieces.
Can you share one of your top styling tips with our community? Sometimes less is more. Yes I mix and match pieces together randomly or like to dress over the top sometimes but nothing beats a sleek, polished look that's classic and simple. If your hair and makeup are fresh and done, putting together some simple basics will always make you feel finished.
